Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang: The Go-To Formula for Digestive Problems
Updated March 2026 · 7 min read
Bloating after every meal? Acid reflux that won't quit? Alternating between constipation and loose stools? Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang is one of the most clinically effective formulas in TCM for complex digestive disorders — and it's been in use for over 1,800 years.
What Is Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang?
Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang (半夏泻心汤), the "Pinellia Decoction to Drain the Epigastrium," comes from Zhang Zhongjing's Shang Han Lun (伤寒论, c. 200 CE) — one of the most important medical texts in history. Zhang Zhongjing is often called the "Hippocrates of Chinese Medicine."
The formula addresses a pattern called "pi" (痞) — a feeling of fullness, stuffiness, or blockage in the upper abdomen (epigastrium) that is soft to the touch but uncomfortable. This happens when Hot and Cold become tangled in the middle, disrupting the Stomach's descending function and the Spleen's ascending function.
Ingredients
- Ban Xia (半夏) — Pinellia: The chief herb, descends rebellious Stomach Qi, resolves phlegm, stops nausea
- Huang Qin (黄芩) — Scutellaria: Clears Heat from the upper and middle burner
- Huang Lian (黄连) — Coptis: Strongly clears Stomach Heat, stops acid
- Gan Jiang (干姜) — Dried Ginger: Warms the middle, dispels Cold
- Ren Shen (人参) — Ginseng: Tonifies Spleen Qi
- Da Zao (大枣) — Jujube: Nourishes the Spleen
- Zhi Gan Cao (炙甘草) — Honey-fried Licorice: Harmonizes all herbs
The brilliance of this formula is its simultaneous use of Cold herbs (Huang Qin, Huang Lian) and Warm herbs (Gan Jiang) — clearing Heat above while warming Cold below. This "harmonizing" approach is unique to the Shang Han Lun tradition.
What It Treats
1. Chronic Bloating and Fullness
The hallmark symptom: a stuffed, blocked feeling in the upper abdomen after eating, even small amounts. The area feels full but is soft when pressed (not hard or painful). This distinguishes it from food stagnation.
2. Acid Reflux (GERD)
When Stomach Qi fails to descend and rebels upward, acid comes with it. The combination of Huang Lian (to clear Stomach Heat/acid) and Ban Xia (to redirect Qi downward) makes this formula highly effective for reflux.
3. Nausea and Vomiting
Ban Xia is the premier anti-nausea herb in TCM. Combined with Ginger, it powerfully settles the Stomach and stops vomiting.
4. IBS-like Symptoms
Alternating constipation and diarrhea, gurgling sounds in the abdomen, and irregular bowel movements — the mixed Hot-Cold pattern that this formula addresses closely mirrors what modern medicine calls Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
5. Chronic Gastritis
Modern clinical studies in China have extensively used Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang for chronic gastritis, with promising results in reducing inflammation and improving symptoms.
