TCM for Menstrual Pain: Stop Suffering Every Month
Updated March 2026 ยท 8 min read
Period pain isn't "normal" โ at least not in TCM. While modern medicine often says "take ibuprofen and deal with it," Chinese Medicine sees menstrual cramps as a clear signal that something is out of balance. And it's been treating dysmenorrhea effectively for thousands of years.
The TCM Principle
"Bu tong ze tong, tong ze bu tong" (ไธ้ๅ็๏ผ้ๅไธ็) โ "Where there is blockage, there is pain; where there is flow, there is no pain." This is the fundamental principle. Menstrual pain means something is blocking the free flow of Qi and Blood in the uterus.
4 Types of Period Pain
1. Cold Uterus (ๅฎซๅฏ)
Pain type: Cramping that feels better with a heating pad. Worse in cold weather.
Period: Dark blood with clots, scanty flow, delayed cycle
Other signs: Cold hands/feet, pale face, loose stools, clear urine
Cause: Eating too much cold/raw food, iced drinks, walking barefoot on cold floors, swimming during period
Formula: Wen Jing Tang (Warm the Menses Decoction) or Ai Fu Nuan Gong Wan
Immediate relief: Ginger brown sugar tea, hot water bottle on lower abdomen, moxa on Guan Yuan (CV4)
2. Blood Stasis (่ก็)
Pain type: Sharp, stabbing, fixed-location pain. Worse with pressure. Improves after passing clots.
Period: Dark purple blood, large clots, pain peaks on days 1-2
Other signs: Dark lips, spider veins, dark circles under eyes
Formula: Shao Fu Zhu Yu Tang or Tao Hong Si Wu Tang
Immediate relief: Gentle movement (walking), rose tea, avoid sitting still for long periods
3. Qi Stagnation (ๆฐๆป)
Pain type: Distending, bloating pain. Moves around. Breast tenderness before period.
Period: Irregular cycle, flow starts and stops, PMS mood swings
Other signs: Irritability, sighing, rib-side pain, bloating
Formula: Xiao Yao San (start 1 week before period)
Immediate relief: Deep breathing, gentle stretching, jasmine or rose tea
4. Qi and Blood Deficiency (ๆฐ่กไธค่)
Pain type: Dull, dragging ache. Worse at the END of the period. Feels better with pressure.
Period: Light pink blood, scanty flow, prolonged spotting
Other signs: Fatigue, dizziness, pale face, shortness of breath
Formula: Ba Zhen Tang or Gui Pi Tang
Immediate relief: Rest, warm bone broth, red date goji tea
