The Yin Yang Diet: Eating for Balance
Updated March 2026 Β· 8 min read
In Chinese Medicine, food is the first medicine. Before herbs, before acupuncture, there is diet. And the foundation of TCM nutrition is simple: eat to restore balance between Yin and Yang in YOUR body.
Yin and Yang in Food
Every food has a thermal nature β not its physical temperature, but its effect on your body after digestion:
- Yang (warming) foods: Generate heat, boost metabolism, move energy upward and outward. Examples: ginger, cinnamon, lamb, garlic, chili, onion.
- Yin (cooling) foods: Clear heat, calm inflammation, nourish fluids. Examples: cucumber, watermelon, tofu, mung beans, pear, mint.
- Neutral foods: Neither warming nor cooling. The foundation of daily eating. Examples: rice, potato, carrot, pork, eggs, corn.
The goal isn't to eat only one type β it's to adjust your diet based on your body's current state. Too much heat? Add cooling foods. Feeling cold and sluggish? Add warming foods. Read more about warming vs cooling foods.
Eating for Your Body Type
If You Run Hot (Yang Excess / Yin Deficiency)
Signs: Feel warm easily, thirsty, red face, irritable, constipation, dark urine, night sweats
Eat more: Cucumber, watermelon, pear, mung beans, tofu, fish, leafy greens, chrysanthemum tea
Eat less: Lamb, chili, ginger, garlic, fried foods, alcohol, coffee
Cooking methods: Steaming, boiling, raw salads (in moderation)
If You Run Cold (Yang Deficiency)
Signs: Cold hands/feet, pale face, fatigue, loose stools, frequent urination, prefer warm drinks
Eat more: Ginger, cinnamon, lamb, chicken, walnuts, leeks, fennel, black pepper, Qi-boosting foods
Eat less: Raw salads, ice cream, cold drinks, excessive fruit, tofu, soy milk
Cooking methods: Slow-cooking, stewing, roasting, soups
If You Have Dampness
Signs: Heavy body, bloating, sticky mouth, greasy tongue coating, sluggish, overweight
Eat more: Barley (θη±³), corn silk tea, adzuki beans, white radish, seaweed, bitter melon
Eat less: Dairy, sugar, wheat, bananas, greasy/fried foods, excessive raw food
Cooking methods: Light stir-fry, steaming, clear soups (not creamy)
Eating with the Seasons
- Spring π±: Liver season. Eat green, sprouting foods β leafy greens, sprouts, scallions. Sour flavor in moderation. Avoid heavy, greasy foods.
- Summer βοΈ: Heart season. Eat cooling, hydrating foods β watermelon, cucumber, mung bean soup, mint tea. Bitter flavor clears Heart Heat (bitter melon, green tea).
- Late Summer πΎ: Spleen season. Eat warm, easy-to-digest foods β rice congee, pumpkin, sweet potato, ginger. Avoid cold and raw.
- Autumn π: Lung season. Eat moistening foods β pear, honey, lily bulb, white fungus, almonds. Avoid spicy and drying foods.
- Winter βοΈ: Kidney season. Eat warming, nourishing foods β lamb, bone broth, walnuts, black beans, goji berries. Store energy, eat more.
The 5 Flavors
TCM categorizes foods by five flavors, each affecting a specific organ:
- Sour β Liver: Astringes, preserves fluids. Lemon, vinegar, plum. Too much tightens and stagnates.
- Bitter β Heart: Clears heat, dries dampness. Green tea, bitter melon, kale. Too much dries and depletes.
- Sweet β Spleen: Tonifies, harmonizes. Rice, dates, honey, sweet potato. Too much creates dampness.
- Pungent β Lungs: Disperses, moves Qi. Ginger, garlic, onion, mint. Too much scatters Qi.
- Salty β Kidneys: Softens, moistens. Seaweed, miso, soy sauce. Too much hardens and damages Kidneys.
A balanced meal includes all five flavors in appropriate proportions.
Golden Rules of TCM Eating
- Eat warm, cooked food β your Spleen prefers it "pre-digested"
- Don't drink ice water with meals β it extinguishes digestive fire
- Eat breakfast like a king, dinner like a pauper β Spleen energy peaks 7-9 AM
- Stop at 70% full (δΈει₯±) β leave room for digestion
- Eat with the seasons β nature provides what you need
- Chew thoroughly β digestion starts in the mouth
- Don't eat when emotional β anger, sadness, and worry impair digestion
- Variety over supplements β a diverse diet beats any pill
