TCM for Weight Loss: Why Diets Fail and What Actually Works

Updated March 2026 ยท 8 min read

Counting calories. Cutting carbs. Intermittent fasting. You've tried them all, and the weight keeps coming back. TCM takes a completely different approach: fix the root imbalance, and the body finds its natural weight.

The TCM View of Weight

In Chinese Medicine, excess weight is not about willpower โ€” it's about your Spleen's ability to transform food into energy instead of storing it as dampness and phlegm. The saying goes: "Fat people have more phlegm-dampness" (่‚ฅไบบๅคš็—ฐๆนฟ).

When the Spleen is weak, it can't properly transform fluids. These fluids accumulate as dampness, which thickens into phlegm, which manifests as fat deposits, water retention, and sluggish metabolism.

3 Patterns of Weight Gain

1. Spleen Qi Deficiency with Dampness (่„พ่™šๆนฟ็››)

Body type: Puffy, soft fat. Water retention. Swollen face in the morning.

Signs: Fatigue, bloating, loose stools, heavy limbs, poor appetite but still gaining weight

Tongue: Pale, swollen with tooth marks, white greasy coating

Formula: Shen Ling Bai Zhu San or Er Chen Tang

Key foods: Barley water (่–็ฑณๆฐด), adzuki beans, corn silk tea, white radish, pumpkin

Avoid: Dairy, sugar, cold drinks, raw food, bananas, excessive wheat

2. Stomach Heat (่ƒƒ็ƒญๅž‹)

Body type: Solid, firm fat. Big appetite. Gains weight from overeating.

Signs: Always hungry, thirsty, bad breath, constipation, acne, red face

Tongue: Red with thick yellow coating

Formula: Fang Feng Tong Sheng San

Key foods: Bitter melon, mung bean soup, cucumber, celery, green tea, lotus leaf tea (่ทๅถ่Œถ)

Avoid: Spicy food, alcohol, fried food, red meat, late-night eating

3. Liver Qi Stagnation (่‚้ƒๅž‹)

Body type: Stress eater. Weight fluctuates with mood. Fat around the waist and sides.

Signs: Emotional eating, PMS weight gain, rib-side tension, anxiety, irregular periods

Tongue: Dark or purplish edges

Formula: Xiao Yao San

Key foods: Rose tea, hawthorn, citrus fruits, jasmine tea, celery

Avoid: Eating when angry/stressed, alcohol, excessive caffeine

TCM Weight Loss Teas

Lotus Leaf Barley Tea (่ทๅถ่–็ฑณ่Œถ):

  • Dried lotus leaf (่ทๅถ) โ€” 10g
  • Barley (่–็ฑณ) โ€” 15g (dry-fried)
  • Hawthorn (ๅฑฑๆฅ‚) โ€” 10g
  • Tangerine peel (้™ˆ็šฎ) โ€” 5g

Simmer for 20 minutes. Drink 1-2 cups daily. Lotus leaf clears dampness and promotes fat metabolism; barley drains dampness; hawthorn digests fats; tangerine peel moves Qi.

Acupressure for Metabolism

  • Zu San Li (่ถณไธ‰้‡Œ) ST36 โ€” Below the knee. Strengthens Spleen, boosts metabolism. Press 2-3 minutes daily.
  • Feng Long (ไธฐ้š†) ST40 โ€” Midway between knee and ankle, outer leg. The #1 point for resolving phlegm-dampness. Press 2 minutes per side.
  • Shui Fen (ๆฐดๅˆ†) CV9 โ€” 1 inch above the navel. Regulates water metabolism, reduces water retention.
  • Tian Shu (ๅคฉๆžข) ST25 โ€” 2 inches beside the navel. Regulates intestines, relieves constipation.

TCM Eating Rules for Weight Loss

  1. Eat warm, cooked breakfast by 9 AM โ€” Spleen energy peaks 7-9 AM
  2. Biggest meal at lunch โ€” Stomach energy peaks 11 AM-1 PM
  3. Light dinner before 7 PM โ€” no eating after sunset
  4. No cold drinks ever โ€” they damage Spleen Yang
  5. Chew 20+ times per bite โ€” digestion starts in the mouth
  6. Stop at 70% full โ€” the golden rule of TCM eating
  7. Move after meals โ€” a 15-minute walk aids Spleen transformation
